A Two-Week Family Road Trip Through the Scottish Highlands

This summer, in July, my family and I embarked on a road trip adventure through the breathtaking Scottish Highlands. With my husband and our 4-year-old son in tow, we set off for a two-week journey that would take us through some of the most magical places Scotland has to offer. From scenic drives to hiking trails, castles, and delicious food, this vacation was a dream come true.

Our journey began in Glasgow, where we soaked in the city’s vibrant atmosphere. The architecture, bustling streets, and charming locals made for a perfect start. But it was just the beginning—our real adventure lay in the Highlands. We made our way to Oban, a quaint coastal town famous for its fresh seafood and delicious treats. Needless to say, we indulged in way too much fish and chips 🐟🍟, and no trip to Oban would be complete without a visit to the Oban Chocolate Company. Their handmade chocolates and truffles were absolutely divine, and we couldn't resist taking some back with us for the road! 🍫

Next up was the stunning Isle of Skye, where the landscapes are otherworldly. We hiked the Fairy Pools and explored the mystical Fairy Glen, both of which felt like stepping into a fairytale. Our son was captivated by the idea of fairies living in the hills, and the natural beauty surrounding us was unforgettable. 🏞️
On our way to Isle of Skye, we visited the picturesque Eilean Donan Castle, a must-see stop for anyone visiting the area. 🏰 The beauty of the castle against the backdrop of the lochs is like something out of a postcard.

In Inverness, we experienced the essence of Highland culture, catching some Highland Games along the way. The energy, music, and traditional sports were such a fun way to immerse ourselves in Scottish tradition. And a stop at Ness Farm gave us a lovely glimpse into the rural life of the Highlands and a fun day to spend time amongst some llamas and highland cows. .

We also spent time exploring Glencoe, a valley with dramatic mountains and deep history, and hiked around Signal Rock, where the stunning views made the effort worthwhile. Another hidden gem was the charming village of Tomintoul, known as the highest village in the Highlands, where we enjoyed more of Scotland’s rugged beauty.

One of our favourite things about the trip was the freedom to drive wherever we wanted, stopping at random spots along the way to take in the scenery. The vast, open landscapes, winding roads, and mist-covered mountains were a sight to behold. 🚗🏞️ And yes, we definitely ate more fish and chips than we should have, but when in Scotland, right?

After two amazing weeks, we wrapped up our trip in Perth, a lovely town that gave us one last taste of Scotland before heading back. The entire experience was not just a vacation, but a memory we’ll treasure forever.

If you're considering a road trip across the Scottish Highlands, do it! It’s the perfect blend of nature, culture, history, and family fun. Plus, it’s kid-friendly, with enough adventure to keep little ones entertained while offering plenty of scenic spots for the adults to unwind and soak in the beauty of Scotland.

I will do separate posts highlighting each area and where we stayed later so do check back as I will be posting from time to time, whenever I can sneak a moment for myself.

To wrap up, I will just say that it was the perfect family getaway, full of nature, history, and amazing food!
